I've got a PS3 controller that I use with my 2011 MBP, and I've never had a problem getting it to work with any controller-compatible game except one (Super Meat Boy, couldn't get the buttons mapped in a reasonable way). You can map the mouse to the right joystick and it does control the mouse pointer on the desktop, but for some reason it doesn't translate to looking around once you are in the game. It worked fine on 2D games that don't require a mouse for looking around. While many iPhone and iPad games already offer on-screen controls, Apple's new virtual game controller is available to all developers, easy to add, and can be customized on a per-game basis. Until Steam updates controller support, this is the best we get. If you’re using a PS3 compatible controller then you can skip the next step and jump immediately to the next section.

This is the only app I could find that will let me use a controller with 2D Steam games on my M1 Mac on Big Sur. 3 axis and 18 buttons (six push buttons, one 4 way hat switch, and one 8 way point of view hat) Dual rotary trim controls allow for precision adjustment of ailerons and elevators.
